Pinoy Pod 15

The Kuyas of Comedy

Three months ago, we featured an interview with Rex Navarrete, the most famous Filipino American comedian today. This week, we focus on two other Filipino humorists who are trying to tickle the Pinoy funny bone in Manila.

Allan Manalo was a theater artist and stand-up comedian in the San Francisco Bay Area when he decided to move to the Philippines three years ago. He has slowly built a following in the last few years, and has become so popular that the Ateneo De Manila University, one of the country's top universities, even hired him to teach a course on stand-up comedy.

Tim Tayag is another FilAm pioneer who is trying to popularize American-style stand up comedy in the Philippines. A survivor of the dot-com boom and collapse, he has developed deep insights into the type of comedy that clicks with Filipinos. A key ingredient, he said, is: Be yourself.
